【#Director Insights】 #34 Am I Too Obsessed? Why Can’t I Stop Striving for Perfection in Every Piece?
Sometimes, I ask myself:
Am I being too obsessive?
Every time I work on a paper carving, I find myself chasing after the tiniest details.
Every cut, every line — they all have to be just right before I can let go.
While others might finish a piece in a day or two,
I often spend one to two weeks, carefully rechecking every curve,
every stroke’s depth, thickness, and alignment...
Even the parts barely visible to the naked eye — I simply can’t overlook them.
Friends often laugh and call me a perfectionist.
But deep down, I know — it’s not just about artistic obsession.
It’s about respecting the culture behind every creation and preserving its essence.
Recently, we received a very special commission.
A local gift company in Malaysia approached us,
requesting a paper carving artwork of one of Melaka’s most iconic landmarks:
the Melaka Sultanate Palace.
This palace is anything but simple.
It was rebuilt in 1986, based on historical records from the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals).
Constructed entirely from wood, without a single nail,
it reflects the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional Malay architecture.
Today, it stands as a cultural museum in the heart of Melaka.
When the client handed us the reference images, my first reaction was:
“Wow — the details in this building are truly overwhelming!”
The layered roofs, intricate carvings, lattice windows, wooden corridors, and supporting pillars...
Every element, every proportion had to be faithfully reconstructed to capture its dignity and elegance.
We used countless layers of paper to build a strong sense of depth and dimension.
Each tiered rooftop, each carved frame — all were handcrafted, piece by piece.
What you see is a piece of art.
But what we’re really handling is the soul of a building.
And that made me reflect on a timeless question:
Are we simply creating decorative pieces?
Or are we preserving a visual memory of history through our craft?
Perhaps that’s why I keep pushing for such extreme precision.
Because to us at Kamicarv,
every paper carving isn’t just a product — it’s alive.
It might become a focal point in your office,
a heartfelt gift to someone you love,
or even a visual trigger that brings back memories of a chapter in your life.
That sense of life, of soul — it’s not something beauty alone can convey.
It lies in the details.
In the endless rounds of prototyping, carving, layering, and testing.
In the time, hands, and heart we invest,
in that unwavering spirit of “never just good enough.”
So if you ask me,
“Why go through all this trouble for perfection?”
I’d simply say:
Because I care too much to settle.
I want every person who receives a Kamicarv piece
to feel that quiet, heartfelt dedication flowing through the layers of paper.
This Melaka Sultanate Palace paper carving
is one of our most cherished works in recent months.
It’s not just a piece of art —
It’s like a letter from the past,
softly whispering the story of Malaysia’s cultural richness, wisdom, and craftsmanship.
So, if you ask me whether this “overly attentive” habit wears me out —
I’d say:
This is how we pay our respects.
This is how we love paper carving — with everything we have.
